Zagol Ethiopian Restaurant

A New Start!

Overview

One of my favorite restaurants is Zagol, which was introduced to me by a friend. I used to dislike onions, but that changed after having their Zil Zil Tibs dish. Unfortunately, the owner, Shitah, received notice that she had to either move to a new location or close down due to the landlord wanting to sell the building. Despite not having a brand, she remained optimistic for a fresh start.

Approach

We completed the task quickly and on a budget. The items she had were hastily put together years ago. To begin, I researched Ethiopian culture and found some valuable information. Afterward, we looked at a few options that she could use for her brand, using what we had learned. My wife and I took pictures and videos of her restaurant and created her brand while also volunteering to paint her new space to get it ready for opening.

Brand Identity

In collaboration with Shitah and her daughter, we decided to use the lion as a symbol for their business, as it represents strength and righteousness. To showcase their menu, my wife and I took photos and videos which were later used for the website we created.

Working with Shitah to develop her brand really was an honor. I will never forget the delight of listening to her stories and enjoying good food after a long day of painting.

Results

This project was blessed from the start. Not only my wife and I but many people came to her aid. Another gentleman paid her rent for six months to ensure a solid start to her new location. Her restaurant has been able to operate on fewer hours and is still a local favorite.
